Why would you perform the T-Peel test instead of the 90 or degree test? Well, the 90 and degree tests are commonly used where a flexible material with an adhesive or other bonding method is adhered to a more rigid substrate.

The T-Peel is used when both materials are either similar or both flexible. The T-peel test requires that both of the bonded substrates are flexible. This test is optimized for tapes with flexible backings, or tapes that are adhered to a similar flexible substrate. Unlike the degree peel test and 90 degree peel test, the T-peel or trouser method is the easiest test to set up and conduct. These types of tests are often done on transfer tapes or at converting companies that may use tape to attach to foam or plastic materials. Most tapes are made using a roll to roll manufacturing process. Identifying problems between each process roll can cut down on scrap and improve overall yield rates.

ASTM D1876 T Peel Resistance Test Equipment for Adhesives

This test method is used to determine the relative peel resistance of adhesive bonds between flexible substrates utilizing a T-type specimen. The test specimen is loaded into a tensile tester with the bent, un-bonded ends clamped in the grips. The specimen is then pulled apart, and the peak and average peel forces are measured. Though no specific parameters or procedures for preparation are provided, it is important to follow all manufacturer instructions. Accordingly, it is essential that the adhesive manufacturer provides all relevant specifications for the application of the adhesive. These include surface preparation, mixing directions, application rate, and thickness and curing conditions. If one or more of these specifications is not provided, it is important to document the parameters used so that the test can be repeated or used for comparison.
